Reese Dual Cam - bracket problem

We have been running our usual set up since White Salmon thru Oregon into California across to Williams and now are in Amarillo. Coming into Amarillo we noticed that the bolts which hold down the bracket onto the TT hitch was loose and noticed a problem with the braket.
Purchaed two new brackets today and hubby mounted them. Now I am concerned as to whether that single bolt can safely hold down the bracket. I know, I know, it was installed properly, etc. etc.
But this wife just has concerns now. The snap bracket had to be replaced as it was bent. I know the roads across I-40 were rough coming into Albuquerque and also leaving Alburquerque, but was the road that rough to loosen the bolts on the bracket?
Inquiring minds want to know.
On edit : it is the top bracket

RE: Thought I had the mail straightened out Not

likewise we have a rented box at Postnet (mail handling service), and our daughter goes once a week and calls me to sort out the mail, sometimes she opens the mail, and shreds what I tell her to shred. She forwards our mail every other week to wherever we will be at the time. We are going into our 3rd month and so far so good. Will think about having her send our magazines in January with the Priority Mail Envelope when we will be somewhere for over 45 days.

RE: us highway 40

Thanx for the words of advice - we are in Amarillo tonight. Road construction going on between Clines Corner and Amarillo. Should be nice once the new asphalt is completed and both sides of the divided highway are open once again.
Yes stuff shifted in the travel trailer between Clines Corner and Amarillo, but nothing broken. May have to see about securing the vacuum cleaner next leg of trip.
BTW snow was on the hills surrounding Albuquerhque this morning when we stepped outside.

RE: Economy Downturn

Been reading this thread and it is indeed interesting how diverse the forum posters are .. that is what makes life interesting. We all have our own reasons for living the lifestyle we are living.
We are on this trip looking for our "snowbird spot" (even though we are fulltimers for four years) and just got a call from Hot Springs AR wanting us to volunteer for January and February. Not what was in the plans, but somewhere we want to be to see friends and relatives once again, so we are going. We were in one area for a year to help out a family member, and now are free again.
After years of being "tied down" to a job, house, committments, we are free.
And that is what is important to us at this stage of our lives. I love diversity in our lives, that is what makes life interesting to us.

RE: Carpet change out

Since there is so little carpet needed we opted to go to the expensive $26 sq yard home carpet with pad and had it installed by a RV Sales/Repair shop.
They did a marvelous job and some of the carpet is slid under the slide with the floor of the dinette (slide part) also carpeted. It has made for a nicer floor to step out onto in the early cold mornings.
I think it is about 4-5 inches under the slide and hasn't caused us any problems in 4 months. The carpet is thick, and deep pile whic looks loads better than the old carpet. It is also a varigated brown which helps with spilling stuff on it. When it needs cleaning, we probably will opt to have it done commercially also.

RE: Thanksgiving, What I'm thankful for

After four years of fulltiming, we are finally enjoying Life on our terms. Left the cold north, headed south, spent the week at Lake Havasu City, came down here to Williams for Grand Canyon Train trip, tomorrow going to Albuquerque, then further East or South. We are taking this year to do for ourselves, no committments for volunteer or anything. Life is good. We will continue to volunteer after these next 12 months, just taking a vacation. This is what we like about the lifestyle, we like it where we are, we stay, we don't we, move. Looking forward to seeing our friends along the way.

RE: full time for a couple years??

We are traveling from Washington State for the next 12 months to find "our winter place". Now in California, in Paso Robles, and now Bakersfield, both places have their advantages, but who knows how we will decide after we meander across to Hot Springs, Arkansas and on down to southern Georgia? We may not find "the place", but we are having fun!

RE: us highway 40

Ok, I have to ask here .. we are in Paso Robles, California and planning to go to Grand Canyon (Williams), and then onto Albuquerque over Thanksgiving.
From these postings, perhaps we need to change our plans on the route from here to Oklahoma City .. do we need to look at an atlas and change our routing?
Sounds like the pulling a 30 ft trailer on 40 is a roll of the dice this time of the year. No, we have no real reason to go to Albuquerque, some place else would be ok. as long as we get to Oklahoma City to Ft. Smith route.

Take down lists ... have one?

It seems some time ago someone had a check off list for taking down the RV (getting the RV ready to tow or go down the road) .. like antenna down, slide in, hot water heater turned off, etc. Or is it something I would like to see .. can't remember exactly which.
Anyone have one already made up?

RE: Arroyo Grande CA to Torrance CA

We are here in California - now we are at Wine Country RV Park, Paso Robles. Nice place.
Now that we know what the roads are like down here .. maybe I can re-open this discussion. We have decided to stay a few days here at WCRP and do day trips into Arroyo Grande. Wondering if best bet is to travel from here to Bakersfield, then do the Grapevine with only our tow vehicle to see relatives in Torrance.
It is lovely weather here compared to Mt. Shasta earlier this week!
Any routing helps would e most appreciated.

We headed out south to Oregon and now are in Paso Robles, California for a few days, then Grand Canyon and next is Albuquerque .. then ? just playing it by ear as to when we move, but would like to be in Nashville for Christmas, then southern Georgia. Just deciding as we go .. we stop and see friends and relation as we head South then East - journey is a bit slow.

RE: Thanksgiving Plans

This will be the first year that we have traveled without set plans or committments .. hopefully will be in Albuquerque over Thanksgiving, then Christmas maybe in Nashville or South to Georgia. We were in Hot Springs, AR in 2004 for Thanksgiving. Think we probably just lounged around and ate.
yes, these past weeks on our travels South from rv park to rv park that most of them have some sort of planned potluck scheduled for the week of Thanksgiving. Speaking of eats, we stopped in Yreka at a place called "Grandma's", it was good, old fashioned eating with good wait staff, and not high priced.
My favorite Thanksgivings have been where there is a simple menu, like one year after a death in the family, on Thanksgiving morning we went to a deli for a picnic lunch, went to the park, shared memories, and had a quiet picnic. If we are far enough South will consider that this year. Maybe even swing on the swingsets!

RE: Mattress Replacement

We had problems with our mattress after 4 years and had read where people on this forum had bought a foam topper. They had said be sure to get the best and at least a 2 incher, I was sceptical. We went to Target and bought a good foam topper and a great mattress pad, we like it now. The combination worked for us. The mattress pad is one of those all natural fabrics ones. I am glad I read here about the foam toppers, etc.

RE: Did you cry when your realized you were a fulltimer??

We left the house 4 years ago, and finally sorted through the remaining "stuff" and are now satisfied that what we have with us and what is in storage is what we want to keep. We just had new carpeting put in our home .. we are houseless as far as stix and brix, but not homeless. In fact, we had home carpet put in, wow, what a difference from that typical rv carpet. And whenever we say we are going home - it is the RV.
When we hit the road 4 years ago, we were getting over a health issue which turns out ok for us, and so were elated to get on with the rest of our lives. We may not have danced, but we smiled and enjoyed seeing our family who are/were on the East Coast and friends in Missouri. Yes, we have family scatteried over the U.S. plus Canada. This lifestyle allows to take our home to see them. Adjustments? Yes! Missing yardwork, utility bills, neighbors, no! Now if we don't like the neighborhood, we move!

Pet boarding needed in Havasu, AZ

We will be needing a boarding facility for our chihuahua for a week in Havasu City while we go on a mini-vacation with friends.
Any suggestions out there please? We really are not at all familiar with the area around there, so any helps would be appreciated. We were just invited and will need something the week of Nov 13-20th.
Thank you.

RE: HAVE TO ASK

HOW HAS THIS ECONOMY AFFECTED you fulltimers?
i know from reading posts alot of people here that fulltime are retired and were living off of retirement accounts, 401k and pensions.
these accounts are probably down 30-40%. just wonddring how this is affecting peoples lifestyle.
Between national company retirements, ss, and money market in a credit union, we will be ok. Rig is pd for, and have monies to finish paying off tow vehicle (but not wanting to as loan is 2.9%). We are in our late 60s/early 70s, so our view is different than younger ones.
Fall/Winter plans are to start our trip South to Albuquerque, then East to Georgia soon, and nothing has changed. Just will not be moving as often as last time we made this trip. In the rv park here we have seen two rvs being replaced with new and bigger rvs so far this week. Economy must not be too bad. Beauty shops and car dealerships are complaining, as are travel agents in these parts.
We hope to leave the end of this next week as the temps are in the 30s and 40s at night. But can't until to do list is done.

RE: Full timing and my primary doc - rant!

It is nice to see a physician in private practice, however, have not had a problem since going to a hospital clinic whereby I can make appointments with a specific doctor. His associates have come and gone, but my doc has stayed put which I feel is a blessing for me. The hospital does the billing, etc., and has a referral program to which doctors take medicare, medical coupons, etc.
I originally changed to this doctor after having had a doctor who either moved out of the area or retired. Started going to this doctor before I went on medicare which makes a difference also. Finding a new doctor can be a real struggle, and when we cannot get in to see this doctor or being in away from our home site, we go to immediate care clinics.

RE: Odd Question On Travel Trailer for us to travel in

In 2002 we bought a used 20 ft little travel trailer for $6000, bought an ac for it, went on a few trips, but found that after 4 days in the rain that we needed a slightly larger unit to full-time in. It was just us two plus a german shepherd, and now have a 28 ft alpenlite aspen which works for us. Our dog is no longer with us, and so have more room for us two, when shopping we do wish we had shut the bathroom door on this unit, it is a little snug, so I hung a window panel in the hallway for more room when showering, etc. in the bathroom.
Paid $23,000 for it new, and have used TLC in upkeeping it. Put a lot of miles on it from the west coast to the east coast, plus the nw and now are heading south, then east, then north to VA again. We still like the size. For us it was a floorplan which worked, plus it is not an off-road unit which means it has 2 less steps to allow me better flexibility on my bad leg days.
Would not hesitate now to buy used, but need to look at floorplan as others have said, also I am short therefore the cupboard heights was important to me. We looked around for about 8 months before finding something which both of us liked. Check out batteries, how easy it is to hook up to utilities, etc., and does it have enough closets for you, do you want a walk around bed, where do you want the tv. If I were to do this again, I would take a video camera around while shopping, just to remember which unit had what.
